How Does Tooth Decay Happen?

While it’s easy to grasp that tooth decay is bad news for your teeth, it’s important to understand how it is that tooth decay occurs in order to prevent it better. Tooth decay is when the outer layer of enamel on your teeth is broken down by acids released from the plaque that sticks to your teeth.

In particular, it is the acids from sugar-containing foods that break down your enamel, causing tooth decay and a variety of other symptoms.

Slow Down the Sugary Snacks

As our dentist Warrington explained above, it’s specifically the sugars in foods that cause the release of enamel-decaying acids. Cutting down on the consumption of sugar-filled snacks is the primary way of preventing tooth decay. Try to avoid pre-packaged and processed foods as these tend to be high in both carbohydrates and sugars.

We also advise trying to cut out excessive snacking in general. Having your meals spread throughout the day makes it less likely that you’ll be brushing your teeth after each one.

Brush, Floss and Rinse Routinely

Whether or not we like it, every single dentist Warrington will probably tell you to brush and floss your teeth more than you already do. This is because brushing, flossing and rinsing are our primary defences against plaque and tooth decay. At minimum, you should be brushing and flossing your teeth after you wake up in the morning and before you go to sleep in the evening.
